COPE & CABRERA. The latest incarnation of a design house, that’s steeped in a legacy of creating visionary design interiors to a select clientele since the early 1920’s. Gary is now at its helm and represents a lineage spanning three generations, which dates back to his grandfather who founded the business almost a century ago.
And this coming year 2023 is particularly poignant as it will mark 70 years since Gary’s grandfather first became Audrey Hepburn’s interior designer – entrusting him with the commission to transform Ms. Hepburn’s London residence in Mayfair and remaining to this day her only British interior designer!
There has been numerous celebrity clients over the years, however none as enduring as Ms. Hepburn. And it was out of this association that a unique collection of memorabilia was born; amassing into what is today one of the largest private — Audrey Hepburn — collections in the world.
Amongst the assemblage of items are a remarkable number of ‘never seen before’ artifacts including Audrey’s lipstick used in Breakfast at Tiffany’s – a timeless symbol of both cultural and historical significance, which helped to define a style icon as well as an era!
The collection has remained in storage ‘out of the public eye’ for the best part of half a century. Making the archival process particularly problematic, as many of the items required extensive restoration, as well as undertaking a process known as ‘preventive conservation’. And so began the monumental task of preserving the objects – ‘a labour of love’ that has to-date lasted for almost a decade. Gary states “I really didn’t know quite what I was taking on. What began as a 24 month project, has evolved into something approaching closer to eight years and the end is still not in sight. That said, we feel the timing is right for some of these very special and personal items to go on display, as it will be the first time — since the cameras stopped rolling — that they have been seen!”
To commemorate this milestone COPE & CABRERA will be marking the occasion with a new exhibition, featuring many of the never seen before items, including designs and images of Ms Hepburn’s Mayfair home, created by Gary’s grandfather in 1953. The same year Audrey became an overnight international sensation; starring in Rome Holiday – a performance that would garner her an Academy Award for Best Actress and the catalyst for her meteoric rise to today’s iconic status.
